How Long Does PMU Last

PMU does not last forever. Understanding the typical lifespan, what accelerates fading, and when to refresh helps you get the most from your result.

Permanent makeup is semi-permanent. The pigment fades over time as the skin naturally turns over and the body gradually breaks down what was deposited. This is not a flaw in the process. It is how PMU is designed to work, and it is part of what makes it a good choice: the result can be refreshed, adjusted, and updated rather than being fixed forever.

How long a result lasts depends on several factors: the technique used, the individual's skin type, sun exposure, skincare habits, and how well the initial procedure healed. Understanding these factors helps you set realistic expectations and make simple choices that protect your result.

The Typical Lifespan

Powder brows generally last 1 to 3 years. Lip blush tends to fade faster, typically 1 to 2 years, because the lips are highly active tissue and the skin there turns over more quickly. Eyeliner PMU is often on the longer end of the range because the area sees less sun exposure and less contact with active skincare products.

These ranges are genuine ranges, not marketing hedges. The same procedure on two different clients can produce results that look fresh at very different points in time. Skin type is the biggest variable: dry skin tends to hold pigment well and sits toward the longer end of the range, while oily skin breaks down pigment faster and typically falls toward the shorter end.

The color also shifts subtly as it ages. Pigment does not simply fade evenly to nothing. Depending on the formula and the individual's skin chemistry, the tone may warm slightly or cool slightly over time. This is worth knowing because it affects when a refresh makes sense: booking before the color shifts too far gives better control over the corrected result.

What Accelerates Fading

Several factors reliably shorten how long PMU lasts. Most of them are manageable once you know what to watch for.

Sun Exposure

UV light breaks down pigment directly, in the same way it fades traditional tattoos. This is the most common reason clients find their brows fading faster than expected. Applying SPF to the brow area daily is the single most effective thing you can do to extend longevity. This applies year-round, not only in summer.

Retinol, AHAs, and Vitamin C

These skincare ingredients are designed to increase the rate at which skin cells turn over. That is exactly what makes them effective for anti-aging. It is also what makes them effective at pushing pigment out faster. If you use retinol or exfoliating acids regularly, and you apply them near the brow area, expect a noticeably shorter lifespan. Keeping these products away from the brows directly extends how long the result lasts.

Oily Skin

Sebum production breaks down pigment over time. Clients with oily skin will generally need a refresh sooner. This does not mean PMU is a poor choice for oily skin. It means setting expectations appropriately and planning accordingly.

Swimming and Saunas

Chlorinated pools and high heat from saunas and steam rooms accelerate fading. During the healing period the restrictions are strict. After healing, regular exposure will still shorten the overall lifespan, particularly with frequent pool use.

The Ghosting Phase Is Not Fading

One source of confusion around PMU longevity is the ghosting phase during healing. Around week two of the healing process, the brows or lips can look very faint, patchy, or almost invisible. This is often mistaken for premature fading or a sign that the procedure did not work.

It is neither. The ghosting phase happens because a fresh layer of skin forms over the pigment during healing. While this new skin is still semi-opaque, it temporarily obscures the color underneath. The pigment is still there. It becomes visible again as the new skin matures, usually from week three onward. The final settled result appears at weeks four to six. Assessing longevity before this point is not meaningful.

Touch-Up vs Refresh: Two Different Things

The touch-up session at 4 to 8 weeks is not a sign of fading. It is a standard second appointment, booked and priced separately, that refines the result once healing is complete. Healing varies between skin types and even between the two sides of the same face. The touch-up is where Anna adds density where needed, refines the color, and addresses any areas that healed lighter or patchier than the rest. Almost all PMU work requires two sessions to reach the intended final result.

A refresh is a different appointment entirely. It is booked when the client wants to restore or maintain the result as the color fades over time. Anna recommends a yearly refresh to keep the result looking its best, though the right timing varies by skin type and how quickly the individual's pigment fades. A refresh may also be an opportunity to make small changes to the shape or color if the client's preferences have shifted.

The best time to book a refresh is before the color has faded so much that it has shifted significantly. Working with some existing pigment gives better color accuracy and typically requires less work to restore.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do powder brows last?

Powder brows typically last 1 to 3 years before a refresh is needed. Dry skin tends to retain pigment toward the longer end of that range. Oily skin, frequent sun exposure, and active skincare ingredients like retinol will shorten the lifespan.

Why did my PMU fade so fast?

The most common reasons are oily skin, sun exposure without protection, and skincare products containing retinol, AHAs, or vitamin C. These ingredients increase skin cell turnover, which pushes pigment out faster. If you noticed dramatic fading in the first few months, reviewing your skincare routine is the first step.

Can I extend how long PMU lasts?

Yes. Apply SPF to the brow area daily, avoid applying retinol or AHAs directly over the brows, and limit prolonged sun exposure on the treated area. These habits can meaningfully extend the lifespan of the result.

What is the difference between a touch-up and a refresh?

The touch-up at 4 to 8 weeks is a standard second appointment, booked and priced separately, that refines the result once healing is complete. A refresh is a further appointment recommended roughly once a year to keep the result looking its best.

Will the color shift as it fades?

It can. Depending on the pigment formula and individual skin chemistry, the tone may shift slightly warm or cool over time. Booking a refresh before the color shifts too far gives better control over the outcome of the corrected result.
