Powder Brows vs Microblading: What's the Difference?

Two techniques, two very different outcomes. Here is what you need to know before choosing.

Book Powder Brows

Powder Brows

Also called ombre brows, shadow brows, or machine brows.

  • Machine deposits tiny dots of pigment into the skin
  • Creates a soft, powdered shadow effect
  • Suited to all skin types, including oily skin
  • Heals predictably with even, consistent fading
  • Typically lasts 1 to 3 years

Microblading

Also called hair stroke brows or feather touch brows.

  • A hand tool with micro-blades cuts hair-stroke patterns into the skin
  • Creates a natural hair-like effect immediately after
  • Best suited to dry or normal skin
  • Strokes can blur and lose definition over time
  • Often fades faster, especially on oily skin

How Each Technique Works

Microblading uses a manual tool fitted with a row of tiny needles to cut fine lines into the upper layers of skin, depositing pigment in hair-like strokes. The result looks very natural immediately after the procedure, with each stroke mimicking an individual brow hair.

Powder brows use a digital machine to deposit pigment as a series of tiny dots, building up a soft, shaded effect across the brow. Rather than mimicking individual hairs, the result creates a filled, powdered look that can be kept very soft and natural or built to a more defined finish depending on your preference.

How Each Heals

Powder Brows Healing

The brows appear darker and bolder than the final result for the first week. Light flaking is normal as the skin heals. The color softens significantly and the final result settles after 4 to 6 weeks. The healed effect is a smooth, even shading that looks consistent and intentional.

Microblading Healing

Microbladed strokes also darken initially and lighten during healing. Over time, particularly on oilier or thicker skin, the strokes tend to blur as the pigment disperses slightly under the skin. This can result in a less defined look than expected, or in some cases a patchy, uneven appearance as individual strokes fade at different rates.

Longevity

Powder brows generally last 1 to 3 years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, and aftercare. A touch-up session 4 to 8 weeks after the initial procedure is a standard part of the process, and a yearly refresh keeps the result looking its best.

Microblading tends to require a refresh within 12 to 18 months, and often sooner on oily skin. Because individual strokes fade at different rates, the result can start to look uneven before it fades completely.

Skin Type Suitability

Powder Brows

  • Works well on all skin types
  • Suitable for oily skin where microblading struggles
  • Works on mature skin and enlarged pores
  • Can be applied over previously microbladed brows
  • Appropriate for most skin tones and undertones

Microblading

  • Best results on dry to normal skin
  • Not recommended for oily or combination skin
  • More challenging on mature or sun-damaged skin
  • Strokes may not hold well where pores are enlarged

Why Anna Only Offers Powder Brows

After years of specializing in PMU, Anna offers powder brows exclusively. This is not a limitation. It is a deliberate choice based on what consistently delivers the best long-term results for clients.

Powder brows heal more predictably, suit a broader range of skin types, and hold their integrity over time in a way that microblading often does not. The soft, shaded result also naturally avoids the harsh or drawn-on look that many clients fear, and that poorly executed or aged microblading can produce.

The goal is never to create obvious PMU. It is to create brows that look like they simply grew that way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is microblading or powder brows better?

Powder brows suit a wider range of skin types, heal more predictably, and tend to last longer. Microblading works best on dry or normal skin but the strokes can blur and fade unevenly over time, particularly on oily skin.

Which lasts longer?

Powder brows typically last 1 to 3 years. Microblading fades faster, especially on oily or combination skin, and the individual strokes can lose definition as pigment disperses.

Does powder brows hurt more than microblading?

Neither technique should be painful. Both use topical anesthetic before and during the procedure. Some clients find the machine sensation of powder brows gentler than the blade sensation of microblading, but individual experiences vary.

Can you get powder brows if you have oily skin?

Yes. Powder brows are the better choice for oily skin. Microblading on oily skin tends to blur quickly, while the shaded effect of powder brows holds more reliably.
